Weekly Reading Wrap-Up: 23 August 2019

weekly wrap up new

Happy Friday, everyone! This has been a weird week for me for a number of reasons, but particularly because I’ve been working from home this entire week! I’m so ready for the long weekend and can’t wait to read some new books.

Books I read

Blood of an Exile by Brian Naslund

Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu

Despite my best efforts, I’ve only managed to read two books this week, but they happened to be great ones.

Blood of an Exile fed my adult fantasy-starved soul. I feel like I’ve abandoned a lot of the books I would have read pre-blogging (simply because I’ve discovered so many amazing new genres), and this book was something I’ve needed for a long time. A super fun and violent book, Blood of an Exile is a thumping good fantasy read.

I expected Mooncakes to be a nice, soft story about two friends reuniting, but I feel like it was so much more than that. Packed with healthy relationships (familial, romantic, and platonic), great representation, wonderful characters, and a great plot, it put such a huge smile on my face!

Books I DNFed

American Royals by Katherine McGee

I really, desperately wanted to love American Royals because it sounded like such good summery fun, but it just didn’t work for me. The first 100 pages or so were interesting enough, however it just couldn’t hold my interest after that. It’s a bit harsh to say this book was boring but…

I really think that American Royals would have been an infinitely better book if it were written for an adult audience rather than a YA one. I also hadn’t realised that this book was by the author of The Thousandth Floor, another book I really didn’t get on with. I wish I had realised that going in!

Books I am currently reading

Wonderland edited by Marie O’Regan and Paul Kane

Priest of Bones by Peter McLean

I’m in the middle of two books at the moment. Wonderland is an anthology from Titan books that’s, unsurprisingly, filled with stories inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I’m really enjoying it so far, despite not being a fan of short stories.

I’m also reading Priest of Bones, which I’m really loving! I have missed my grimdark fantasy and am so happy that Blood of an Exile has steered me back to it (despite the fact that Exile isn’t grimdark, whatever).

Books I bought

Godblind by Anna Stephens

Romanov by Nadine Brandes

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

I picked up three new books this week! Godblind is a book I’ve been wanting to read for ages and got the opportunity to meet Anna and see her speak at VoyagerCon at Waterstones Piccadilly this week. Romanov was bought off a friend who was unhauling books — I’m not sure about this one so I’m glad I managed to get is used!. And finally, Gideon the Ninth showed up in a particular subscription box this month!

That’s it for this week! How was your week in reading? Did you read anything great or pick up any new books? Let me know!
