Happy Friday, everyone! This week has flown by and it has been a really good one for reading. This is mostly because Scottish Husband is currently away on a work trip and I’ve just been reading the days away. I’ve also been squishing the cats a lot — they’re not pleased.
Books I read
The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow
The House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
I read two books this week and they were both great! The Ten Thousand Doors of January is an upcoming release (out on 10 September!) and I suspect it is going to be on a lot of people’s Best Books of 2019 list — including my own! It’s a wonderful book and I can’t wait for you guys to get your hands on it!
I also read The House of Salt and Sorrows, and wat completely taken aback by how much I loved it! The characters and romance are a little forgettable, but it’s such a spooky and atmospheric book — it’s also a retelling of my favourite fairy tale, “The Twelve Dancing Princesses”. It wont be for everyone because of its dark content (lots of gore and death), but it’s a great fall/October read.
Books I am currently reading
Blood of an Exile by Brian Naslun
I’m currently reading this recent fantasy release and I’m really enjoying it! I’m about a third of the way through and I’m really liking the characters and the world. I can’t wait to dig in more this weekend!
Books I bought
The House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig
The Merciful Crow by Margaret Owen
Zodiac by Romina Russell
I was in London last weekend and hit up Foyles! Each of these are US editions that I can’t get in other UK bookstores. I’ve, of course, already read The House of Salt and Sorrows and can’t wait to read the other two!
Book post
Song of the Crimson Flower by Julie C. Dao
Hello, gorgeous! I absolutely loved Dao’s other books, Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix, so I am naturally super excited for another book in this world! Song of the Crimson Flower comes out in November from Philomel Books.
I cannot wait to read The Ten Thousand Doors of January!

I recently read House of Salt and Sorrows too! I was completely surprised by it. I thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill dark fantasy retelling, but it wasnt! I had to put it down a few times because it was messing with my head.

Yes!! Oh man, some of the spooky scenes were actually really scary. I was in the tub when the bit with the tub and the squid happened. Nope nope nope. Got out of the bath real quick 😂🦑
