Why is it that January feels like the longest month of the year? Maybe it’s the cold and dark, maybe it’s the fact that it’s the start of a new year. Whatever it is, we survived! Hooray!
This was an interesting month for reading. I started the month pretty poorly, but then managed to read three 4.5-5 star reads. Overall, it was a pretty solid book month — I managed to read 7 books.
Books I read
The Girl King by Mimi Yu (review)
The Gutter Prayer by Gareth Hanrahan (review)
In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire (review)
The Wicked King by Holly Black (review)
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara
Thank goodness for audiobooks. Both Throne of Glass and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark are both audiobook reads for me this month, and I’m in the middle of a third one right now. I’ve been so distracted with my crazy February coming up that I’ve just not been reading physical books as much as I could be.
I’m working on putting out reviews for the rest of these books, so watch this space!
Books I DNFed
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
The Twisted Tree by Rachel Burges
Books I bought
In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
The Wicked King by Holly Black
The Warden by Anthony Trollope
The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman
The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
A Sky Painted Gold by Laura Wood
Shadowscent by P. M. Freestone
The Midnight Dance by Nikki Katz
The Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos
The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera
The Copper Promise by Jen Williams
Okay, listen. This isn’t as bad as usual! I’m taking a step in the right direction. Plus, I read a fair few of these this month. So yes.
Book post/event haul
Master of Sorrows by Justin Call
Proud anthology
Music and Malice in Hurricane Town by Alex Bell
Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay
My So-Called Bollywood Life by Nisha Sharma
I was lucky enough to attend Stripes’ YA Equali-tea event in London this month! They generously provided a number of upcoming books, and I can’t wait to dive into these books.
Beat the Backlist progress
I’ve only tackled two tiles on the Beat the Backlist bingo card so far:
- Everyone’s read it but me: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
- 2018 release: I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara
I’ve just started The Gutter Prayer, I’m a few chapters in and living it!

I really need to read The Wicked King, I have it on my shelf and I am pretty sure it is angrily staring at me, lol. You read quite a few good books, I hope you have a great reading month ahead of you!
