Happy Friday! This week has been absolutely insane for a number of reasons – I’ve clearly been a very busy lady. I’ll get into the books that I’m reading but first, announcements! Get ready, this will be a long post.
You’re Never Going to Read This — the podcast
I’m so excited to finally say that Author Sister, also known as Julia, and I are launching our very own podcast. You’re Never Going to Read This is a podcast of two book-loving sisters who never read each other’s recommendations…until now! We both will read a little bit of everything, but Julia tends to read a lot of historical fiction and romance while I (of course) read loads of science fiction and fantasy.
We are launching the podcast on the third of October! You can find it anywhere you get your podcasts — don’t forget to subscribe!
Can’t wait? You can listen to our trailer here! You can follow us on Twitter for more updates.
The Off the Grid Readathon
If you follow Shanah’s marvelous blog, you may know she recently challenged herself to disconnect from the distractions of her phone and read for an entire weekend. I absolutely loved this idea, and we decided to team up and make this a recurring readathon! You can find more info from Shanah’s initial post here, but watch out for more details from both of us and follow the readathon on Twitter for updates!
Books I read
Tarnished City by Vic James
These Rebel Waves by Sarah Raasch
I managed to read two books this week despite the madness of podcasts and readathon announcements! The first book I read was Tarnished City, the sequel to Gilded Cage. I really enjoyed this one — the pacing from the end of the first book didn’t slow down at all! I’m really looking forward to wrapping up this trilogy soon.
I’m making a big effort to read each month’s FairyLoot book before the next one comes in. August’s book was These Rebel Waves, which I managed to finish the night before the September box showed up! I’ve been hearing mixed things about this book and I totally understand why, but I really ended up liking it! It’s not a pirate book as advertised, but it features so many things I love in YA. A review is forthcoming — keep an eye out.
Books I am currently reading
The Lake House by Kate Morton
After Atlas by Emma Newman
The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud
I’m currently reading three books, which is nothing new. My main read is The Lake House, and I’m about 150 pages in. I love historical fiction but don’t read enough of it, so I’m taking this opportunity to soak up some lovely and atmospheric writing.
My audio read is After Atlas by Emma Newman, who wrote one of my favourite books of this year. I’m really liking After Atlas, but I’m not as connected to it as I was with Planetfall. I’m halfway through the audiobook now, and hope to finish up soon.
Finally, I’ve been holding off on The Whispering Skull so I can read it in October. It’s a spooky book, so what better time to read it than Halloween season?
Book post
The Girl King by Mimi Lu
I cannot tell you how excited I was to get a copy of The Girl King in the post this week! I desperately tried to win one at YALC in July, but didn’t manage it. The Girl King comes out in January 2019 from Gollancz, but I’m going to get cracking on it soon!
NetGalley approvals
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard
Windwitch by Susan Dennard
The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley
The Royal Runaway by Lindsay Emory
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
Talk about lucky! Pan Macmillan in particular has been pretty generous with me this week. I ended up with a copy of the first and second books in the Witchlands series, which I am insanely excited to read! The third book just had its US cover reveal and is due to come out soon.
I was also approved for two more romance-oriented books. The Seven Sisters is a book that Author Sister has talked to me about before, and I’m really excited to start this saga from Pan. I got my paws on a copy of The Royal Runaway, which sounds like so much fun! Lindsay is a marvellous author and human and I can’t wait to read one of her books! It sounds like the perfect read for a quiet weekend.
I’ve never been more thankful for my Orion auto-approval status as I was when I saw Skyward available for request. I adore Brandon Sanderson and am so looking forward to his first science fiction novel.
That’s it for this week! I’ll be in London for the Hot Key Books blogger brunch — give me a shout if you’ll be there too!

I seriously can’t wait for your podcast!!! And I can’t wait to see what you’ll force upon your sister 😂 Its Strange how very different your reading tastes are. Oh, and excited for the readathon too! 😂

I’ll be interested to see what you think of the Truthwitch series… I find her writing a little thin, but I respect her for the work she does.
