Weekly Wrap-Up: 07 September 2018

Happy Friday, all!  It seems crazy to me that the first week of September is nearly over.  This week has absolutely flown by — I feel like I’ve been so incredibly busy.  On the bright side, the weather is starting to cool off (and I hope it stays that way), and optimum reading temperatures are on the horizon!  Get those blankets and jumpers out of the loft, guys.

Books I read

Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames

Wildcard by Marie Lu

Kings of the Wyld is one of my faves of this year, so it was really tough to read Bloody Rose only a couple of months after.  I ended up liking Bloody Rose, although it’s a very different book from its predecessor, and I can’t wait to read more from Nicholas Eames.  Check out my review next week!

I’m listing Wildcard as ‘read’, but I’m still 50 pages from the end.  I’ll finish it up about an hour after this goes live, so I’m saying it counts.  I am really enjoying this one, and I think I might like it even more than Warcross.  It has much more twisty turny intrigue than Warcross, and you know I love that.  Keep an eye out for a review around the publication date!

Books I am currently reading

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

In typical Justine fashion, I was reading four books at once this week but am now down to two. Godsgrave is my audiobook and I’m making good progress.  I’m nearly halfway through, and I don’t know what I’m going to do when I finish!  The Nevernight Chronicles are the most fun I’ve had with audiobooks ever.

Finally, I’m also reading Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller.  I’m borrowing this book from the marvelous Asha from A Cat, a Book, and a Cup of Tea.  I was promised pirates and kissing, and that’s exactly what I’m getting. This book is pure fun and I’m loving the experience.

Books I bought

Black Wolves by Kate Elliott

Black Wolves is one of the very first books I mentioned on this blog.  I read it in 2016 and absolutely adored it. I saw the second book was up for preorder and placed my order for that, as well as for a copy of Black Wolves, not realising that The Dread Empire doesn’t actually have a solid release date.  Oh well.

If you are looking for a non-European fantasy novel featuring the most badass of women and older characters, look no further than Black Wolves.  While it isn’t an Own Voices novel, I really think it will tick a lot of boxes for readers looking for diverse books.

NetGalley approvals

Sawkill Girls sampler by Clare Legrand

I have a copy of SawKill Girls on preorder and decided to request the three-chapter sampler from NetGalley (okay, I thought it was the full book.  Oops). I was totally blown away by the atmospheric and eerie writing. I can’t wait to read the full thing!

That’s it for this week!  I’m looking forward to a lazy weekend because I’m going to be pretty busy for the rest of this month!  I’m so excited to be attending the Hot Key Books blogger brunch at the end of the month. If you’re going, let me know!

How was your week in books?  Did you read anything great? Did you pick up anything new?  Let me know!

  1. I’ve been hearing amazing things about Sawkill Girls so I’m very excited for you to read it! 😍 I think I’ll audiobook the Nevernight Chronicles too as consuming them in the physical format along with the footnotes is something I don’t think will appeal to me. You’re one the first people I know to say that you like Wildcard better, which gives me hope. I’ll keep an eye out for your review. 😊 Have a great reading week ahead, Justine! ❤
