Happy Friday! It has been a really great week! We had snow here in the UK over the weekend. It was so cold, but one of the cosiest days ever. Snow, tea, lots of blankets, and books made for a great day.
Today promises to be a good day as well — I have a half day at work, I’m going to see Star Wars, and am going to have tasty barbecue for dinner. It doesn’t really get much better than that for me.
It also happened to be a great week for reading! I keep feeling like I’m in a big reading slump, but I think that this week proved me wrong. I managed to read four books this week, which is kind of crazy, and I’m well on my way to finishing 100 books this year.
Books I read
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
The Selection by Kiera Cass
Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu
Four books in one week is not bad, eh? All of these books were smashing in their own way. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was my second Agatha Christie and I absolutely loved it! I wont say much here because I have done a video review — I haven’t managed to do a written review yet.
The Girl in the Tower was one of my most anticipated books, and I’m so pleased to say that I really enjoyed it. I’ll write a full review for it closer to the UK publication date, but it keeps with the spirit of the first book while standing out on its own.
Now, if I am getting my facts straight, The Selection is a book that really divides people. People either love it or they absolutely hate it. I have to say that it was batshit crazy and I loved it. I was starting to get some reader fatigue and I needed something incredibly silly to read. Was it a great book? Absolutely not. Did it make me cackle with delight? Yep. Did I finish it in a single evening. Totally. Have I already ordered up the second one from the library? Absolutely.
The last book I read this week was Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu, the second book in the DC Icons series. I’ll be doing a video and a written review here soon, but I ended up enjoying this one despite a very, very slow first half. I’ve been a huge Batman fan since childhood and had high expectations for this one. The book had its ups and downs, but I liked it overall.
Books I am currently reading
Strange Weather by Joe Hill
I am Thunder by Muhammad Khan
I’m really struggling to get back into Strange Weather. It’s not that it isn’t a good book! I think I’m just not in the mood for it. I’ve finished the first of the four novellas within the book and have started the second. I just haven’t felt the desire to pick it up again. I may save this one for the new year.
I have, however, immediately gotten into I am Thunder. I started it last night and read until I couldn’t keep my eyes open (which, to be fair, wasn’t very long). It’s a book that is immediately engaging. I have a feeling it will be a heartbreaking and uncomfortable read, but will become a very, very important book. I’m really looking forward to finishing this one up soon.
Books I bought
Ha! Once again, nothing! Look at me, saving all my money for other people’s Christmas presents.
That Inevitable Victorian Thing by E. K. Johnston
Vicious by V. E. Schwab
I won a Twitter giveaway run by Taiwo over at Stuffed Shelves and my prize showed up! I got to pick up to $20 worth of books from Book Depository, so I took the opportunity to get That Inevitable Victorian Thing, which I cannot find in bookstores here in the UK. I also grabbed Vicious, because although I am not a fan of her Shades of Magic series (I know, shock and horror), I really like V. E. Schwab as a human and want to give her other books a shot. I cannot wait to dive into these books!
I cannot wait to see Star Wars today! I’ve combed through my local library’s catalogue and have saved a bunch of the old and new Star Wars novels. I’m so excited!!
That’s it for this week! What have you been reading lately? Have you bought any good books? Are any of these in your TBR? Let me know!
