Weekly Wrap-Up #7

I’ve been pretty busy week with wrapping up loose ends at work and packing, because I leave for New York today!  By the time this publishes, I’ll nearly be at the airport.  There’s not much to report this week in terms of reading, but let’s get to it anyway.

Books I read:

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

The hype was strong for this book and unlike Caraval, it didn’t let me down.  I hadn’t read anything by Laini Taylor before, but I now plan to buy every single thing she’s ever written.  Not only is it physically a gorgeous book, Strange the Dreamer is an incredibly lush, stunning tale that will sweep you away to faraway lands.  I’ll have a review coming as soon as I’m back!

False Hearts is the book I won on Twitter a few weeks ago, and I’ve finally sat down with it.  I was intrigued by the back copy and it hasn’t let me down.  Think dystopian San Francisco, conjoined twins, mechanical hearts, creepy cults, powerful corporations, a mysterious murder, and a new drug that could change everything.  This is exactly the kind of weird and wonderful books I’ve been wanting.  It’s so different from anything else I’ve read and I highly recommend it.

Books I’m currently reading:

State of Grace by Rachel Lucas

I’m really loving State of Grace.  It’s a funny, sweet, quick read told from the perspective of a teenage girl with Asperger’s.  I’m not a huge fan of contemporary YA, but this is an exception to that rule.  I’m about 60% through and plan to have it done by the time our bus pulls into the airport.

Books I bought:

None!  Not a single one!  Look at this incredible display of restraint!  This wont last long though, a trip to The Strand is in order for next week.

Books I plan to read:

I’m really struggling to not bring any physical books with me for the plane journey.  I bought a Kindle for its portability, I actually need to use it.  Ninefox Gambit has snuck its way into my purse though…

Otherwise, it’s going to be an ARC heavy trip!  I’ve got a fair few lined up for the journey, here’s a few that are loaded up and ready to go:

  • Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh
  • Skullsworn by Brian Staveley
  • When Dimple Met Reshi by Sandhya Menon
  • The Fireman by Joe Hill
  • Blackwing by Ed McDonald
  • The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
  • A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

I’m obviously not going to get through all of these, but a serious attempt will be made.  I absolutely loved The Wrath and the Dawn and am so excited for Flame in the Mist.  I’ve been saving it specifically for this trip.  Skullsworn looks great, but has been on these weekly wrap ups for awhile, I need to actually sit down and read it.  I was so thrilled to be approved for the remaining ARCs on the list.  They make for a pretty diverse list, but I’ve heard such great things about each one.

In other news, I got my first piece of unsolicited book mail!  I was so thrilled and happy to discover Orphans and Angels by Linda Finlay waiting for me on my doorstep.

That’s it for this week!  I’ve got a few posts scheduled in for the time I’m away, but otherwise the blog will look a little bare until I return.  I’ll do my best to keep up with comments and such!

Have you read anything good this week?  Got anything exciting on for the weekend?  Let me know!
