5 for Friday

I hope everyone has had a lovely week.  Here are some of the highlights from mine.

#1 Valentine’s Day book haul

Scottish Boyfriend is a very patient man.  After dinner on Tuesday, I dragged him to our local bookshop so I could pick up one or two things.  Ended up with quite the pile.

1984 by George Orwell

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Luna: New Moon by Ian McDonald

The Midnight Queen by Sylvia Hunter

The Stars are Legion by Kameron Hurley

I’m really excited to get cracking on these titles!  I’ve been wanting to read Kameron Hurley for ages and keep seeing Heartless everywhere.  Plus I hope to finally settle the debate between Scottish Boyfriend and myself over which is better: 1984 or Brave New World.

#2 New Phillip Pullman books!

I got really excited when I heard the news that Phillip Pullman was writing a followup trilogy to His Dark Materials.  I know so many people who will be absolutely thrilled!  Confession time though: I’ve never actually read the original trilogy.  I’m going to grab The Golden Compass (Northern Lights for the British folk) and get reading.

#3 Hold Back the Stars

I finished Hold Back the Stars on Monday, which I requested on a whim from the publisher.  I was captivated by the cover, naturally, and didn’t really know what to expect.  You can read my review here (which the AUTHOR liked!!), but seriously pick this up so I can freak out with SOMEONE about it.

#4 Seeking out former teachers

My sister and I got talking the other day about the teachers that inspired us.  She’s an amazing author and I work in publishing — our elementary and middle school English teachers were particularly influential on our future selves.  She found our old 7th grade teacher and, after a bit of freaking out, he responded!  Ahh!  It’s such a great feeling to know that someone who made an impact on your young life remembers you.

#5 Fluffy Corner

Dax bolts whenever she sees me approach with a book. She knows she is being exploited for her cuteness.

That’s all for me!  I hope you all had a wonderful week.
