The first month of the year is over and done with and it has been a busy time for reading. At the beginning of the year, I decided that I wanted to draw up some reading resolutions. How did I do? Let’s see:
Books read:
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet: Becky Chambers
The Last Bus to Wooodstock: Colin Dexter
All the Birds in the Sky: Charlie Jane Anders
The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat: Oliver Sacks
The Cuckoo’s Calling: J. K. Rowling (let’s be real)
The Rebel of the Sands: Alwyn Hamilton
March: Volume 1: John Lewis
A pretty solid month of reads! I technincally started Small Angry Planet at the end of 2015, but whatever. I loved Small Angry Planet and Cuckoo’s Calling. I’m still working out my feelings about both and and Last Bus to Woodstock, reviews are forthcoming. I’m going to press ahead with some non-fiction history in the coming month, I’m looking forward to it!
I wanted to get more into young adult fiction this year — it’s just a genre I don’t know much about. I think I fall to a lot of the preconceived notions about young adult fiction: that it’s childish, full of love triangles, blah blah blah. I’ve been a lifelong fantasy fiction fan and I think YA is a genre is where a lot of good fantasy is being cooked up. Not only does Rebel of the Sands have a fantastic cover (seriously, I love a good cover), it’s also so different from a lot of the adult fantasy I have been reading over the past few years. If you’ve got a favorite YA fantasy, please recommend it!
Currently reading:
Debs at War: Anne De Courcy
March: Volume 2: John Lewis
The Bear and the Nightingale: Katherine Arden
Books bought (oops, wasn’t supposed to do this):
March, volumes 1-3: John Lewis
The Bear and the Nightingale: Katherine Arden
A Closed and Common Orbit: Becky Chambers
Red Mars: Kim Stanely Robinson
Abbadon’s Gate: James S. A Corey
Blood Song: Anthony Ryan
Wishful Drinking: Carrie Fisher
Postcards from the Edge: Carrie Fisher
Binti: Nnedi Okorafor
Okay, so I wasn’t supposed to go buy any books this month. But I’m almost at one-in-one-out! I plan to stick them into the ever-growing TBR pile when I’ve cleared out some space.I think what I’m most looking forward to from these books are March, Closed and Common Orbit, and The Bear and the Nightingale.
How did you all do with your January reads? Buy anything good, read something great? Comment below!
Have you read the Alpha Girl series? Know I’m too old but was obsessed!

I haven’t heard of those, but I just looked them up! They’re being added to my reading list 😍

I’m reading a lot outside of my usual comfort zone right now. I’m midway through a psychology book called Grit that I find surprisingly fascinating, and I’m also reading a women’s fiction called I’ll See You in Paris. Strangely, I also wound up with more books at the end of January than I started January with…

This is something I’ve been trying to do too! It has been interesting reading outside my comfort zone, with a book on neurology being the most out there. I find it rewarding, but am always happiest in my little SSF nook.
